The issue
Rockfall, avalanche closures, and a growing volume of commuter, freight, and recreation traffic all share one narrow mountain corridor. The highway reaches a grade of 10 percent, traverses multiple avalanche paths, and creates challenging driving conditions in every season. Since the road opened in the late 1960s, Teton Pass has been the site of many vehicle accidents.
According to the 2024 Teton Pass Corridor Study of the Federal Highway Commission, the five-year period from 2016 to 2020 saw eight fatal crashes, 60 injury crashes, 78 intersection-related crashes, and 244 property-damage-only crashes — an average of 62 crashes each year. According to WYDOT, accidents in this area have increased by 20% over the last five years alone.
Since 2020, three more fatal crashes have occurred. The deaths of David Page and Nicolaus "Nick" Besobrasow on July 7th are the most recent. Just days later, an RV towing an oversized trailer lost its brakes, crossed into oncoming traffic, and came to a stop just beyond downtown Wilson with its wheels ablaze. These incidents reach far beyond those killed or injured: Wilson resident Randy Roberts had a near-death experience in 2024 when a runaway RV crashed into the Exxon station in downtown Wilson, narrowly missing the gas pumps. In 2025, Ryan and Salene Freeman were side-swiped on their morning commute by a runaway box truck with brake failure, totaling their vehicle and damaging three others. "I am afraid every morning I drive to work," says Ryan Freeman.
Public meeting — August 3, 2026
A community call to action and an exploration of solutions: several brief presentations on Teton Pass highway safety, followed by an opportunity for members of the public to discuss their concerns and propose practical solutions.
